Natural Hair Salons in Major U.S. Cities

photo(5)

Dear Naturals,

This post was inspired by two things. Yesterday, on the radio I heard an advertisements in the car on the way to church about a natural hair salon in Nashville. I was also inspired by my last post about the two sistas who have opened up a natural hair care salon in St. Louis, MO called the Nappy Kitchen.

Now, I know a lot of black women with natural hair do their hair at home, however, a lot of women are daunted by the idea of having to do their natural hair at home by themselves. For some women, they have never dealt with their natural hair in all their adult life and probably most of their teenage and pre-teen years. It can be scary to think about having to deal with hair that is basically foreign and have to try and make it look good.

So, if you are transitioning or are already natural, and you are unsure of what the next step is, going to a natural hair salon is probably your best bet so you can start getting one on one advice about how to keep your hair healthy and beautiful. Here is a list to get you started.

*FYI: The stars by some of the names of the salons means that they have been reviewed by customers to be 4 stars or higher, so definitely check this  out. And now that I’ve done a listing of natural hair salons, I just might do a follow up post of Dominican Hair Salons since those can also be hard to find.
Anywho, I hope these are enough to get you started and if you have visited any of these salons, please comment and tell us about your experience there.

Til we meet again,

    Hi Musica,

Can you recommend any salons in the San Francisco Bay Area?

    Thanks!

Hey TJ! Here are the salons I found for you in San Francisco. Unfortunately they don’t have a lot of choices for a city that size. However, the one main choice you do have seems to be a really good quality salon to go to. If you do visit this salon, would you mind coming back here and telling everyone how it went?

*Note: I don’t believe this salon is especially for natural hair, however, they do dread loc maintanence. I would definitely call and ask them some questions and even ask them for references of clients they’ve worked with that had natural hair. In fact you can do this with any salon. Just b/c they don’t specialize in natural hair does not mean they can’t do natural hair and do a great job with it. So it is worth a shot. Good luck!

    Hey Musica,

Thank you so much for your help (and swift response)! I actually visited Madusalon a few years ago, and I had a good experience. The staff was pleasant and professional, and I remember the salon being a relaxing place in a charming neighborhood.

I’ve worn a shortish (3 to 4 inches) natural for a long time, and I actually went in for one of their Miss Jessie’s treatments. The stylist was honest with me about why she didn’t think that was the best choice for my hair, and gave me some alternatives, which I appreciated. I ended up with a deep condition and a trim, both of which were sorely needed, but I will admit that I was a little underwhelmed by the end result. No doubt because I went in (unfairly) expecting a miracle transformation!

At any rate, I’ve rededicated myself to making my natural hair the best it can be in 2011, so it sounds like it may be time for another visit to Madusalon. I’ve also read and heard positive things about Hairplay, but I don’t have personal experience with them.

TJ, Thank you for letting me know how your experience was at Madusalon. That’s the kind of thing I love hearing about and it helps other people who are looking for the same information. I’m really surprised that there aren’t more choices in a city as large as San Francisco. Would you be willing to travel to a different city to get your hair done?

I understand about expecting a miracle. I mean you want it to look like you just step out of a salon and that you are getting something done there that you couldn’t do at home. Otherwise, why pay all that money. Maybe next time you go (if you go), you can get a different stylist or a different treatment done. But I’m sure, you are a little wary about going again. Maybe next time will be great. You never know.

Anyway, good luck and I hope to see more of your comments in the future! Let me know if you find another salon in your area that does natural hair.
